The ever-fascinating Center for Jewish History recently unveiled two exhibits at the 16th Street facility that are well worth viewing if you have a few minutes of leisure time. The first, which can be seen in the Great Hall of the facility, features a series of Jewish-themed t-shirts (courtesy of the American Jewish Historical Society), or “Shmattes” that are sure to give you a smile, and get you thinking.
Variation on Dr. Seuss!
T-shirts include variants on Dr. Seuss and Jewish-themed plays-on-words. Some of it is cheeky and over-the-top humor, but well worth a quick perusal. On the third floor is a YIVO Institute exhibit entitled “Professional Jokers: Jewish Jesters from the Golden Age of Comedy,” which includes pop cultural artifacts featuring a long list of Jewish comedians, dating back to the Borscht Belt and the Golden Age of television – that would include Milton Berle, Jackie Mason, Jerry Lewis, Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks, and many others, represented by movie posters, LPs, board games, pictures, comic books, Playbills and just about everything else one can imagine, with some concise historical overview narrative placing it all in context.
