Anyone familiar with punk/new wave band Blondie knows that guitarist Chris Stein and lead singer Debbie Harry produce great music. What they might not know is that the one-time couple are also a source of iconic photography that captures not only the band, but the spirit of the band’s heyday in the 1970s. The show contains photographs by Stein, as well as legendary rock ‘n’ roll photographers Annie Liebowitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bob Grossman and Bob Gruen, on display through September 29th at the Chelsea Hotel Storefront Gallery at 222 West 23rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues.

Fans can also view memorabilia such as band t-shirts, concert programs, posters and vinyl records, among other curious items. The exhibit marks the 40th anniversary of the New York band, which continues to record and perform music today. It also coincides with the release of Chris Stein’s photography book Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie and the Advent of Punk, which features photos of such legends as the Ramones, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol and Joan Jett.

Chris Stein, responsible for many of the photos, told The Hollywood Reporter:  “The photos are like songs; they are movements in one larger piece, but they are more specific. I like the photographs of Blondie walking down the street; she’s relaxed and herself. I started taking photos of Blondie when we first met. Then we moved into a bigger place and it got a little more normal and organized. We have a mental connection, and it goes that way when we write music too. We still need one more hit. I take a lot of vitamins. it helps.”

This one is well worth a trip to 23rd Street in Chelsea to see some very interesting pieces of pop-cultural and rock history – it is not to be missed!
