New York City is truly “the City that Never Sleeps” – there is always some kind of epic happening, whether in sports, politics, theater – or the latest accident or catastrophe. In this case, yours truly was enjoying a brisk early morning run along the East River Park this past weekend, when lo and behold, a huge fire reared its head, sending billowing clouds of smoke, fire, and ash clear across the Brooklyn waterfront as far as the eye could see! As residents of NYC can attest, any cloud of smoke on this scale triggers memories of 9/11. In this case, it was more prosaic – a fire started in a warehouse holding paper records for various city departments, law firms, and hospitals going back many years. (Click here for the NY Times more complete description of the accident) As I watched the tableau unfold, two of New York’s Bravest’s sturdy fire boats converged on the scene, and began spraying huge geysers of water on the burning site, in a frantic effort to get the blaze under control. Hats off to the fire department – they got the fire under control shortly thereafter, though the smoke continued simmering for several days. Check out this exclusive footage and pix from the fire, taken shortly after it started last weekend.
