Rihanna was originally set to perform, but had to pull out due to another engagement. Jay Z’s 40/40 Club, located a short walk away, will host an after party. Rapper/producer/fashion designer Kanye West and Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant’s involvement in Jay Z’s extravaganza doesn’t come out of nowhere. Durant, a 5-time MVP winner, signed with Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports in 2013. DONDA, Kanye West’s design and content company, has been partnered with Roc Nation since last year. A concert in one of NYC’s most trendy neighborhoods is sure to sell a couple of products.

The NBA All-Star concert has generated a great deal of controversy due to the likely impact of its multi-day setup on local residents and businesses. Street closures and 24-hour construction will take place in the days leading up to the event, prompting questions about whether it is in the best interest of the neighborhood. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Community Board 5 expressed these concerns in letters to the De Blasio Administration.
