During Madison Square Park’s: Madison Sq. Music: Above Ground Series, I had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Reed’s music. He has performed his amazing music from our subway stations to European lands. Mr. Reed is a charismatic musician who not only sings his songs but simultaneously plays his dreams while performing.
I was able to meet him after his show and he spoke about his music and traveling around Europe. He was also giving out CDs with his new album “Recession Free Music” in brown paper bags with his Facebook and email addresses written on it. The CDs were donation-based, so if someone did not have any money on them, they were still able to listen to his music. These innovative CD covers add to the relationship Mr. Reed has with his audience. He engages in a genuine connection with his listeners that is truly inspiring.
I was lucky enough to ask him a few questions:
FIHN: What was your most memorable concert in NYC? In Europe?
Mr. Reed: In New York City, my most memorable performances have ranged from performing in the subways of this great city of New York, to performing at the Hammerstein Ballroom for America’s Got Talent, where Howard Stern said, “I think Mr. Reed is a huge star…my hat is off to you, when you open your mouth and sing, it is absolutely beautiful.” I have had many great experiences performing in Europe and definitely one of my highlights was performing at the North Sea Jazz Club in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The audience was very receptive and I continue to speak to my fans from the Netherlands. I am super excited to return to perform in Europe again soon. I am heading out on my third European tour from August 24th- September 24th, with dates in France and Sweden confirmed thus far.
FIHN: After our short discussion today, we notice that you love to talk to your fans and be personal with them. After your concerts, do you usually talk to your fans?
Mr. Reed: Connecting with the audience on and off of the stage is so very important to me. It is an extension of the experience received by the audience during the show for me to break the fourth wall and connect with them in conversation after the show. I really value the intimacy of connecting with my fans.
FIHN: Do you wish to interact more with friends?
Mr. Reed: Interacting more with my friends? The nature of being a touring artist is that you will travel often and I often do miss my friends and family. At the same time, I am extremely fortunate to have such a vast network and community of fans, friends, and family who support me as I travel to each city, state, and/or country. When I tour, I always will make new friends and also reconnect with others.
FIHN: How did you come up with the album title of “Recession Free Music”?
Mr. Reed: My album title refers to the idea that no matter what is going on in the world, in the economy or my life, I will always bring my audience the highest quality product. Listen to it here for free: facebook.com/MrReedEnt, youtube.com/MrReedEnt, or via reverbnation.com/MrReedEnt
FIHN: What is something that NYC has that other cities don’t have?
Mr. Reed: New York City is peerless in its diversity. The vast cultural and ethnic landscape of the city makes for amazing opportunities in interacting with new peoples, tasting new foods, entertainment and experiencing different perspectives.
FIHN: In your concert in Madison Square Park, you said that a video of your music gained a million hits overnight in Japan. What did you think when you realized that over a million people listened to your music?
Mr. Reed: I was touched, I write my songs to connect with a large and popular general audience. I write my songs with the desire to contribute comfort to the vastness of the human experience. My songs run the gamut of telling stories about love, loss, excitement, war, friendship, the good times and the bad times. When you discover that your music supersedes all of the barriers of language, race, socioeconomics, gender, etc., you’ve just got to go and connect with your audience, I have a gift and I am happy to travel wherever there are listeners. Shout out to all of my fans in Japan, I look forward to performing for all of you soon. A million Japanese fans overnight is a blessing, and that turned into 4 millions more fans once the videos were shared by U.S. outlets. My brand is gaining new supporters everyday. Again, I am grateful.
FIHN: Do you have any comments you want to share to our readers?
Mr. Reed: I am just happy to share with you readers that it is so very important for you to discover what you love to do. This life we have is short and we have the opportunity to live it to the fullest by discovering what we are passionate about and achieving within that passion to our greatest ability. In doing that, you will discover help and support. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you.
Thank you, Mr. Reed, for sharing your experiences with us and be sure to visit some more of the Madison Sq. Music concerts this summer!
