With the unending stream of crassly commercial promotions taking place in the Flatiron Public Plazas, it was especially gratifying to see one of the truly worthy non-profits making an appearance for a great cause. That would be “SmileTrain” – the group that funds surgical repairs for cleft palates in children around the globe. Their motto is, fittingly, “Changing the World One Smile at a Time!”
The Smile Train group had a tent and pavilion set up, and attracted a nice crowd of Flatiron denizens on Friday morning, going all out to promote awareness for their fund raising for the effective surgery that repairs cleft palates in children the world over. The well-established surgery turns what would otherwise be a disfiguring and problematic fate for children born with this congenital medical problem into happy, smiling faces. It is one of the situations where if our world, acting collectively, can come up with the money for the doctors and clinics, there is a complete cure. So, the Smile Train staffers were out in force on a rainy day, with signs, placards, banners, and many, many happy before-and-after photos of smiling children to make their case as part of “World Smiles Day” to drum up support for their non-profit. As part of the effort, they had a wheel of fortune offering small prizes for those willing to hear the tale and consider making a small donation – they also were giving out t-shirts and promotional literature. Their social media strategy, a requirement in our web-happy district, was to complete a short testimonial and poster for their bulletin board indicating what makes you smile, and then take a selfie of yourself and your sign and post it to the hashtag “SmileTrainWSD”. They had a good start on their billboard with pics of many happy kids showing the results of the surgery, and that in and of itself is worth a quick stop on your way to work. To make a donation on their behalf, check out www.smiletrain.org on the web, or call 800-932-9541 to hear more. If you can’t make it in person, check out this quick Flatiron Hot!
