Could it be? Was that a life-size teddy bear doing a meet-and-greet in the Flatiron Public Plazas on a sunny and windy Thursday morning? Why not, as all of us who make Flatiron and Chelsea our home are well acquainted with the larger-than-life promotions that set up shop to entertain and sell to us on our way to and from work. The Flatiron Public Plazas at 23rd and 5th, right in front of our favorite landmark, has become THE mecca for advertising and media promotion for many products and services.
Sure enough, taking his place on a well-trodden path (who can forget the talking carrot and the 10-foot-high singing tomato last year?), a life-size version of the well-known “Snuggle” Teddy Bear was mugging it up for parents, kids, and many passersby, pausing to take pictures and plug everybody’s favorite fabric softener and encouraging us to bring on the the love for Valentine’s Day! He was directing all comers into a tent setup with Snuggle paraphernalia and flanked by a giant billboard promoting Snuggle wares. The Snuggle marketing team had booths setup within, and was encouraging visitors to fill out a Snuggle Valentine’s Day card professing their love and devotion to all things Snuggle. In return for posing for a quick picture with their over-sized V-Day cards and well wishes scribbled therein (post them with hashtag #bearyourheart), participants were eligible for some cuddly-and-soft prizes – towels, Snuggle samples – and of course, Snuggle teddy bears! Yours truly took a few minutes to fill out a card, greet the bear, and talk with the Snuggle promotion team. They are in the Plaza until 6:30 Thursday evening, so don’t miss your chance to greet the bear, get some free Snuggle samples, and maybe win a free teddy bear.
