I quite unexpectedly got a sneak preview of the latest Toyota subcompact – a new version of the Corolla featuring a useful hatchback option. I did a double-take while crossing Broadway and 23rd Street on the way to the NYC Seminar Center Offices, when I saw what appeared to be a huge egg hatching. Right there in the North Public Plaza was a giant open “hatched” egg with a gleaming blue Toyota on display for all Flatiron denizens to check out. Toyota staff were there to answer questions, and were offering free gifts in return for pics and selfies of their new model with

the appropriate hashtag #toyotahatch on social media. Upon getting a fun pic with the preview model, you were given a giant coin with the hashtag on it, which you could then deposit in a giant “gum ball” machine which, in turn would give you an egg containing your prize. Lots of fun! This promotional event was right in line with the use of the Flatiron Plazas, where we have seen eye-catching over-the-top promotions such as giant tomatoes, walking carrots, and absurdly placed tennis courts, basketball courts, and hockey rinks in front of our iconic Flatiron Building so as to get maximum exposure and lots of social media coverage.
