Summer has hit the city, and the Flatiron District and Chelsea neighborhoods are bursting with exciting public programs that make great choices for some after-meeting fun. There’s live performances, mouthwatering food, breathtaking art and flora, and educational classes, not to mention fun games and dances. There is no better time to plan your event in the district, and the New York City Seminar and Conference Center can assist with your event as well as grant you access to the city’s finest diversions. Here’s a rundown of what’s on offer:
Summer in the Square
Every Thursday from June 14th to August 19th
Meet us at Union Square Park as it presents an exciting line-up of fitness classes, family-friendly activities and shows, live music, dance productions, and movie nights. Heart-pumping workouts led by the hottest studios and instructors take place every morning and evening, while live music by the New School for Jazz will provide the soundtrack for your meal every Thursday from 12 – 1:30 pm. After your meeting, visit the park again for its epic Dueling Performances series, highlighting two artists at the top of their trade every Thursday at 5 pm. Each week experience a different act from beat boxers and DJs to a capella singers and dancers. For a full line-up of performances, check out their schedule here.
Broadway in Bryant Park
Thursdays, July through August
A huge host of activities are offered at Bryant Park daily, including brass bands, dance parties, movie nights, piano performances, opera and Shakespeare acts, book club talks and live readings, fitness classes ranging from pilates and tai chi to fencing and boot camp, game socials, and business talks. Check them all out here.
However, the Broadway in Bryant Park program is so spectacular that it needs to be separated from the rest. Over several weeks, the most popular shows on and off Broadway perform their biggest hits. For theater enthusiasts and families alike, it’s a wonderful way to spend a Thursday lunch hour and see snippets of Broadway’s coolest shows for free. Just grab a bite to eat, bask in the sun, and let your inner show-tune-loving heart play. The highly anticipated lineup for 2018 has not been released yet, so stay tuned for updates!
Tech Tuesdays in Partnership with General Assembly
Every Tuesday from June 19th to August 7th
You’re invited to Flatiron’s South Public Plaza to take a quick and free tech class. Get your mind in-the-zone for a meeting by learning about coding with local institutions and businesses. Classes are free and open to the public but are subject to change due to weather. The rain location is at General Assembly’s Flatiron location, at 10 East 21st Street between 5th and Broadway. Location changes are announced by noon on the day of class, so follow @FlatironNY on Twitter for last-minute updates.

Grab your friends and have a fun time playing games on Flatiron North Public Plaza every Thursday from 11 am to 7 pm. Jenga, cornhole, Connect Four, and board games are just a few of the options available. Local businesses and organizations will also join in on the fun to provide free cultural education and entertainment for kids, like bookbinding and photo frame arts & crafts projects. At 6 pm, local musicians will entertain passersby.
For the Foodies (and the Hungry)
Madison Square Eats, a block from NYCSCC and featuring 25 of the city’s favorite vendors, is closing in three days, so make sure to drop by soon! However, it will be followed by Big Apple BBQ, bringing tasty morsels and stellar sounds from all over the country to our doorstep on June 9-10. We heartily encourage visitors to sample all 15 pitmasters, get just a little tipsy on beer and wine, and dance your heart out to live music. All proceeds benefit the Madison Square Park Conservancy, which keeps the park healthy and beautiful as well as sponsors various cultural and educational events for the public.
In addition, if you’re mourning the closing of Madison Square Eats, have no fear! Broadway Bites in Greeley Square is just a short walk away, and boasts some of the city’s most beloved chefs as well as talented up-and-coming entrepreneurs bringing their flavors to the markets for the first time. With 29 vendors spanning a diverse spectrum of palates, from Asian-Mexican and Russian to English and Hawaiian, there is something here to satisfy everyone’s cravings!
To appease your sweet tooth, just a block outside NYCSCC’s door, step out to Flatiron’s plaza on select Thursdays for cold treats and summer sweets. The BID is partnering with Eataly and Shake Shack for their “Summer Scoops,” featuring complimentary servings of Eataly’s gelato at their “Summer Scoops Kickoff” (June 21), Shake Shack’s Frozen Custar at “Mid-Summer Scoops” (July 19) and concluding with “Summer Sweets” consisting of mini cannoli’s provided by Eataly (August 9).
Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year
June 21st from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm
Join us on North Public Plaza to celebrate the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. Cast your shadow to mark the time on the longest day of the year and help create a large-scale human timepiece. Leave your personal mark on a jumbo sundial banner that will be displayed in the nation’s only Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) through the end of June.
OUT OF LINE and ARRIBA! series
For dance enthusiasts, experience bold, experimental performances by some of NYC’s most exciting artists, or throw on your own dance shoes and move to hype beats in an open-air dance floor at sunset.
