Learn New Computer Skills at the Tech Tuesday Lecture Series in Flatiron
Reported by Mitchell Kabakow for Flatiron Hot! News
Last Tuesday, the 3rd of July, I attended a technology lecture as part of the Tech Tuesday series. Tech Tuesdays are a series of lectures and technology classes run by the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District (BID), in collaboration with General Assembly. The lectures are usually held at 6:00 pm outside the historic Flatiron Building, just one block from the NYC Seminar and Conference Center. Unfortunately, due to the rain, the lecture I attended was held inside at the General Assembly offices on West 21st Street.
The topic of the lecture I attended was an introduction to HTML and CSS programing. These two languages are the main languages used in website coding and are popular due to the ever-increasing importance of basic tech skills in the workforce. The participants came from varied age groups and backgrounds. Among those in attendance were college students, a consumer research technician, and an early childhood teacher hoping to bring tech skills into the classroom. The lecture began with an explanation of the uses of HTML and CSS followed by a hands-on tutorial on how to use the languages. Each participant created a small webpage containing an image, text, a colored background, and a link. The instructor, Nikolai Chowdhury, was very good at presenting the information clearly and was willing to answer any questions.
Overall, I had a very good experience with the Tech Tuesday lecture and would highly recommend attending one to anyone who wants to improve their technology skills. The lectures will be held every Tuesday this summer until August 9th outside of the Flatiron Building on the public plaza. The lectures are free to the public and walk-ins are welcome. If you have some free time on Tuesdays and want to learn new technology skills, I would highly recommend Tech Tuesdays with the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership BID.
