Memo Shish Kebab Opens Turkish Fast-Casual in Flatiron/Chelsea on 23rd and 6th!

The Flatiron District, Chelsea, and NoMad continue to be a mecca for a cornucopia of interesting and varied fast-casual food establishments opening for the benefit of our neighborhood.  American, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, BBQ, Middle Eastern, Turkish – they can all be found in abundance up and down the 23rd Street corridor, and along 5th Avenue and Broadway in the vicinity of Madison Square Park, Union Square, and Herald Square – it is truly an embarrassment of riches!

So, it was with great curiosity that as soon as I saw Memo Shish Kebab open directly across the street from NYC Seminar and Conference Center’s offices at 71 West 23rd Street, on the southwest corner of 23rd and 6th, I ventured out in search of some interesting Turkish lunch fare.  I decided to stick to the basics – a bowl of lamb and chicken kebab, on a bed of rice and lettuce with sides of hummus and baba ganoush.  I found it tasty and flavorful, and more than filling.  Service was a dream, and there was plenty of seating for me to settle down and sample my choices.  The hummus and baba were fresh and spiced just right. The chicken and lamb – right off a big spit, were warm and tasty.  A quick perusal of the menu included wraps, gyros, and combination plates featuring several meats. My total check for lunch was a little under $15, well within the range of the many fast-casual dining emporiums that have taken root in our busting neighborhood.

I took a little time to speak with the establishment’s owner, Mehmet Avci.  He explained to me that the Flatiron-Chelsea site is an extension of Memo’s very extensive and successful operation in Brooklyn at 1821 Kings Highway, which goes back more than 10 years.  So Mehmet is an experienced operator, and has a track record of success.  He told me that Flatiron and Chelsea are where the action is, and he feels his new place has a chance to thrive because of the willingness of the neighborhood to try out all the different kinds of cuisines with an open mind. He hopes to get traction with the many businesses in the area that offer catering opportunities … and of course, the excellent Turkish fare I sampled would be a great choice for clients running events at NYC Seminar and Conference Center!

So, definitely check out Memo at 100 W. 23rd Street (southwest corner of 6th Avenue and 23rd; memoshishkebab.com, 212-318-2115) and click here to see their grand opening menu and give it a try – you won’t be sorry!
