We all know and enjoy the great variety of dining options in the Flatiron District and Chelsea. New York City Seminar and Conference Center’s patrons can take a lunch break or after-event sojourn from its 6th Avenue offices at 71 West 23rd Street and choose from an unmatched series of reasonably priced eateries that fit their needs and tastes! Well, now there is one more – Cava, a fast-casual purveyor of Mediterranean fare, which opened its doors at 678 6th Avenue right next to Chipotle, Starbucks, and McDonald’s on the east side of 6th Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets. Cava now has 8 sites in New York, as well as in other cities around the U.S. I stopped by with great interest this past week at lunch hour to sample their food.
“Cooking with Fire” is the Cava motto
The new site, a companion to the well-regarded venue that resides at Park Avenue South and 24th Street, has a well-lit and friendly vibe, with butcher-board table-top seating and plenty of space to sit during your lunch hour. As with many of the new fast-casual venues, you queue up on a swift-moving line, and select your base of salad, rice, beans, or other grain choices, followed by your choice of protein (diced chicken, lamb meatballs, falafel, beef) and then some great toppings (tomato and cucumber salad, cauliflower mix, onions, feta cheese and many more!), topped off with a wide array of sauces (tahini, dill yogurt, sesame sauce, etc.) with an optional pita. They offer as beverages “craft” sodas and lemonades and teas that are extremely tasty – to my mind superior to your usual ordinary sodas.
I tried a bowl combination and drink and found it tasty and filling – the portions are quite generous and you eat it with the great feeling that you are consuming “real food” and not the processed or mass-produced fare at the typical fast food places. The price came in at just under $14 for my lunch. I was able to find a comfortable table to enjoy my meal and watch the crowds going by on 6th Avenue. The food was very tasty, and not too spicy, which I like – and most important, they handled the ordering, delivery of your choices, and payment in an efficient manner so that you don’t waste any of your precious lunch hour! I particularly appreciated their well-conceived “Level Up” app which I immediately downloaded, which made my payment process (with promotional credits!) very easy indeed – just scan your bar-code on your phone and you’re off to enjoy your food! For those who remember the since-departed Verts (later Noon) eatery on 23rd Street between Madison and 5th, it is very similar in taste and style, and a worthy successor.
I can well recommend Cava to anyone who wants a healthy, nutritious, affordable and tasty quick bite in the vicinity of the NYCSCC. Good luck, and welcome to the neighborhood, Cava!
