Reported for the Flatiron Hot! News by Sanika Shah
If you walked by the Flatiron Public Plaza this past Monday, you may have noticed something unusual: a giant rainbow slide. In the month of June, this would not come as a surprise, as rainbows have been popping up all over the city for Pride Month. Tinder, one of the most popular dating apps, set up the slide near Madison Square Park to kick off Pride Week.
The slide included a clever play on words across the side – “slide into your senator’s DMs.” This was to encourage people to write to their senators to support the Equality Act. The Equality Act is a bill – that must be voted on to pass – amending the Civil Rights Act to ban discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation in employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system. Many celebrities have endorsed the Equality Act, including Taylor Swift. You can sign her petition here.
Additionally, Tinder cleverly constructed the slide to be 30 feet long, representing the 30 states that “still do not protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination,” as they explained on the tent pictured below.
For every ride down the slide, Tinder donated $10 to the Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest civil rights organization advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. You can learn more and donate here. Every person who rode down the slide received their choice of a free Pride item: a pair of sunglasses, a visor, a pop-socket, or a sticker. Be sure to look out for more Pride events this week!
