Music, sun, friends, food – could you imagine a more perfect break in the middle of your hectic week? Madison Square Park Conservancy makes this a possibility every Wednesday this summer, all for free. I suggest packing a towel and some sunblock for a great way to relax after your meeting at the NYC Seminar and Conference Center and before you grab a delicious meal at one of the many dining options (see here) in the Flatiron District.

Last Wednesday, I attended a free concert performed by The Martha Redbone Roots Project. It was completely chill, not too hot, and the perfect precursor to my dinner at Shake Shack (the original one is right in Madison Sq. Park!). Additionally, I was able to enjoy the view of Leonardo Drew’s stunning art installation (read more about it here) and examine it up close after the concert.

Martha Redbone, a Brooklyn native, not only sang the soul and blues music beautifully, but she kept the audience engaged by asking them to interact with her music, telling personal anecdotes, stories about each song, and reeling off several great jokes. It was an amazing performance that integrated multiple cultures, incorporating her quite evident American roots, while she brought her own story to the concert.

Despite these concerts being overly crowded in the past few years, I definitely think that that conservancy has taken the “less is more” rule into account. While there were enough people that the concert didn’t feel boring, there was ample space to lay your towel down and still have a good view of the concert even if you were late.

This week, the summer series will feature Treya Lam in Madison Square Park, whom the advance press describes as  “… A  multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose cinematic songs and compositions are built on dynamic piano, ethereal vocals, meditative guitar, and lush chamber-folk arrangements.” Read more about her here she seems awesome, so make sure you get a seat on the lawn right up front!
