Pen + Brush is a nonprofit organization that aims to showcase the work of female artists and writers. Their gallery is located on 22nd Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South, just a short walk from the NYC Seminar and Conference Center. Free and open to the public, Pen + Brush is perfect to visit during your lunch break or after your meeting. A big thank you to the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership for keeping us updated on events in the area!

The exhibition currently on display is called, “Women’s Work: Art and Activism in the 21st Century.” The exhibit showcases five international female artists: Sama Alshaibi (Iraq), María Magdalena Campos-Pons (Cuba), Miora Rajaonary (Madagascar), Suchitra Mattai (Guyana) and Ming Smith (U.S.). The art is curated by NYU Assistant Professor of Art & Public Policy and OF NOTE magazine founder, Grace Aneiza Ali.

“Women’s Work” conveys the message that even though the role of women throughout the years has expanded, the Oxford Dictionary still defines women’s work as domestic, such as sewing, needlepoint, cooking and child rearing. The exhibition argues that all women’s work is valuable and ever-changing in today’s society.

The Pen + Brush gallery space is open and expansive, with an industrial feel. Steel beams line both sides of the gallery, with exposed brick throughout the space. Artwork is displayed grouped by artist, which allows you to appreciate one style of work at a time. The artists span a variety of media, including photography, painting, collaging, and fabric materials. Be sure to check out downstairs, where you can enjoy a short film and additional artwork.

“Women’s Work” will be on display until August 2, 2019. Pen + Brush displays exhibitions year-round, so keep an eye out for future exhibitions by clicking here. Pen + Brush also hosts book launches, writing workshops, and other events. Learn more about upcoming events here, email info@penandbrush.org, or call (212) 475-3669.
