New York City prides itself on being a cultural capital of the world. One aspect of NYC that I love is that there is art everywhere we look. From art installations in parks, to dancing street performers, to the famous theater district, to magnificent buildings, there is art all around us. Down the street from the NYC Seminar and Conference Center is the Flatiron Building. Millions of tourists travel to this iconic building to take pictures and to marvel at its beauty. If you look at the front of the building on the street level, you will see a glass display jutting out. This is called the Flatiron Prow, where art installations are showcased to the public.
This week, I had the opportunity to sit down with the one and only curator of the Prow art installations, Cheryl McGinnis. Cheryl McGinnis has been an art curator in NYC since 1995. She has a passion for storytelling, by both artists and consumers. Her goal is to have people converse with each other about what they see and feel, and for art to influence their perspective on life. Cheryl McGinnis wants to know if by looking outward, can a person discover something inward?
One of Cheryl McGinnis’s missions is to have art be accessible to everyone. She argues that there is a lack of diversity in the art world, both among creators and among topics of interest, which creates a barrier between artists and consumers. Art needs to be made by diverse individuals to be consumed by a diverse audience. Similar to other art forms, representation is so important to the industry and diversity in art is a cause that Cheryl McGinnis is passionate about. We wish Cheryl McGinnis the best of luck in the future and are excited to see what is next!
