The Wheel of Fortune is Back!
Kazem Moradi and I, representing Flatiron Hot! News and its sponsor NYC Seminar and Conference Center, attended the official opening of this year’s interactive art exhibit, called Ziggy, and “Days of Cheer Kickoff” in the Flatiron Public Plazas this past Monday evening (see our recent post). It was cold and drizzling, but the weather provided an atmospheric backdrop and set the stage perfectly for the new exhibition, along with our own neighborhood’s landmarks and sights. The art installation, called “Ziggy,” proved irresistible, and after we recorded the opening ceremonies for posterity, we proceeded to model and mug on the new exhibit!
Strings of light are part of Ziggy’s appeal!
The light drizzle certainly didn’t deter us – we’ve seen worse weather in past kickoffs. Ziggy’s bright neon lights shined brightly through the haze, forming a nice contrast with the backdrop looking north toward the Empire State Building. As we took in the sight lines and absorbed the atmosphere for a few minutes, our friends and colleagues at the Flatiron 23rd Partnership shared some words to mark the occasion of “Days of Cheer”. The new head of the Flatiron BID, James Mettham, introduced himself and the first holiday sculpture under his watch, and spoke of how he hoped it would successfully continue the tradition of the last few years’ exhibits, each of which had its own special tactile and visual appeal. Who can forget the hammocks, or the Kirby-esque time portal, or the silvery mirrors from past years?

to represent. Anyone who wants to hear what was said can view the video in the banner of this post, which we dutifully transcribed and expeditiously posted to this blog soon after the event. After the talking concluded, we were able to appreciate the other items that were set up beside the art exhibit for this event. There was a long line of people waiting for a chance to spin the ever-popular Wheel of Fortune, with various prizes depending on which part of the wheel was being pointed at when it stopped spinning – these of course being offered by all of our favorite Flatiron establishments! There was also a giant-size “Connect Four” board and a bean bag toss for visitors who wanted to test out their throwing abilities and keep the kids busy. Our own Shake Shack provided hot chocolate, and Eataly, not to be outdone, provided free pizza for all! NYCSCC and Flatiron Hot! News contributed the sturdy pewter podium used by the many speakers and notables in attendance.
Play some Connect Four with the Kids!
There were dozens of people enjoying the festivities and coming up with all sorts of creative ways to take pictures of Ziggy with their phones from various different angles. The exhibit will be up for everyone to see over the next few weeks. Whether you want to just pass by and take a look or try and gain a more in-depth appreciation of it, you can’t go wrong. Enjoy the Days of Cheer for the next three weeks, and sample the best of what Flatiron has to offer! All a stone’s throw and short 5-minute stroll from the offices of NYC Seminar and Conference Center.
